Did the Maya make predictions about 2012 being the end of days or is it another online hoax?

Certainly one of the most talked about 2012 predictions is that of the Mayan and Aztec Civilizations.  The Mayans have a calendar that ends on Dec 21, 2012. Why is this calendar so important?

• It was created over 5,000 years ago and is incredibly accurate. Many wonder if a civilization from so long ago could have possessed the needed technology to make such a calculation

The Mayan civilization was among the most technologically advanced people in the world. Some of their math and astrological discoveries were so far ahead of their time, many believe the knowledge came from extra-terrestrial sources.

The Mayan Prophesies
